Long, long, ago there lived a nice and friendly duck. She was so polite and helpful that every one of his neighbours liked her. One day she laid six eggs. Just after that day she started to dream about her nice little babies. She always expected her babies would be like her, kind, generous and happy. She never liked gloomy children.
Then, one day, an egg was cracked and a wonderful duckling came out. Within a few days all the eggs were cracked and all the ducklings came out, except one. That egg took a long time and was finally cracked after two or three days. But alas, this baby wasn’t as healthy as the others. It had a cute look but wasn’t fat and nice-looking. It was thin and weak in the first looking. It also didn’t like to eat food like his brothers. That duckling wasn’t actually very much considered by his own brothers.
Soon the ducklings grew larger and their mom finally took them to the nearby pond. All the ducklings started swimming nicely, but the weak one, who was named Eddie, stepped aside the pond water and told his mummy that he don’t like to swim and can’t do it. Hearing that, his mother got angry and at once, told Eddie that he should go home and stay like a sick baby.
The other day, Eddie and his brothers went to the pond and arrange a simple competition on swimming where the swan’s children participated. In the competition, Eddie swam slowly and quickly got past from the others. By this time he was stuck in something. He cried out for help, and the other ducks and swans came to him. Then, a swan noticed a simple little plant that stuck the weak duckling’s toe. By this he got totally ashamed and thought himself as a coward.
Slowly a change took place in Eddie’s mind and he started to take it as a big challenge. He then asked his mother to teach him the strategy of swimming. He got himself into it and trained hard for success. Then, one day, there was announcement.
The duck’s society arranged a big tournament for swimming and diving ability. Following his brothers, Eddie also gave his name to the competition and was neglected by all his brothers. However, he was supported by his mother. Eddie practiced harder than before. Finally the day came.
The competition started with the hit. From there, ten participants were selected of fifty six. Quite surprisingly, all of Eddie’s brothers were out in the hit. Only Eddie survived in the top ten. In the final game, there was a very tough competition with Eddie and one swan-kid. He was bigger than Eddie and tried to hit Eddie while being in the back. Just when he thought he had hit strongly, Eddie played a quick trick and dived into the water. The swan-kid took it as a chance and ran fast. But, as Eddie was very fast in deep-water, he ran towards the finishing line and touched the finishing line with a splash. His mother cried out happily about her son’s credit.
That’s how Eddie is now considered as a fine swimmer and is admired by all of his brothers. Eddie has learnt the truth that hard-working is the key to all success.
